REACTIV photochromic sunglass lenses. The world's most advanced lenses

FAQ

While Category 4 sunglasses provide the highest level of UV protection, they are not suitable for driving due to their strong light filtration. In addition, sunglasses with side shields can block peripheral vision, making them unsafe for use behind the wheel. For driving, choose sunglasses with a lower category lens and an open-frame design that allows for a clear view of the road and surroundings.

Photochromic lenses adjust to changing light conditions by getting lighter or darker depending on the amount of UV light present. The more UV light—or the brighter the conditions—the darker the lens becomes, and vice versa. REACTIV is the name for our proprietary photochromic technology.

REACTIV photochromic technology is helpful when the weather changes, if you're recreating early or late in the day or if you're in and out of the woods frequently. Since the lenses change how light and dark they are, you don't need to switch from one lens to another or take off your sunglasses/goggles as conditions change.

Julbo offers a variety of REACTIV photochromic lenses, which are available in polarized and non-polarized options.

Read more about REACTIV photochromic technology here.

REACTIV lenses are photochromic and adjust to changing light conditions by getting lighter or darker depending on the amount of UV light present. REACTIV lenses are made of NXT (Trivex), which has the clarity of glass and exceptional durability and impact resistance.

SPECTRON lenses are not photochromic and will not lighten or darken. SPECTRON lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is shatter resistant, and are a versatile lens suitable for all types of activities.

Visible Light Transmission (VLT) refers to the percentage of light that filters through a lens—the higher the number, the more light passes through. A window in a home, for example, might have a VLT of around 70%, allowing most visible light to pass through while filtering enough to keep your sofa from getting bleached. A typical goggle lens, like a home’s window, has a fixed VLT—the amount of light it lets through and blocks out remains the same, no matter how bright or dark it is outside.

The VLT of Julbo’s REACTIV lenses, on the other hand, changes as ambient light changes. The new REACTIV 0-4 lens, which has the widest VLT range of any photochromic lens on the market, has a range of 83 to 5%. In other words, just 5% of visible light filters through the lens under extremely bright conditions, allowing for ultimate protection. Conversely, 83% of visible light filters through when it's dark out, allowing for total clarity. Regardless of VLT, REACTIV lenses filter 100% of harmful UVA, B, and C light.

High Contrast lenses have a rose tint and rose base color, designed to enhance contrast. HC (rose/red) tints are ideal for situations with varied terrain in low light, for example snowy, flat light or during poor weather.

Light Amplifier lenses have a yellow tint and yellow base color, designed to brighten everything by increasing light receptivity. LAF (yellow) tints are ideal for darker conditions, like trail running and mountain biking in the woods or recreating early and late in the day.

Proper cleaning helps prevent damage and extends the life of your lenses. Avoid using solvents, chemical cleaners, paper products, gloves, or anything abrasive, as these can scratch the lens. Scratches are not covered under our lifetime warranty, so be sure to clean and store your eyewear carefully to keep it in top shape.

CLEANING SUNGLASSES

1. Gently wash the frame and lens in soapy water.

2. Rinse the frame and lens thoroughly with clean water.

3. Wipe away moisture with a soft microfiber cloth or non-abrasive material. Let the glasses air-dry.

4. Store glasses in their microfiber case/pouch. Avoid direct sunlight or leaving next to a heat source.

    The 0-4 Lens is amazing!

After absolutely using and abusing an old pair of Shields 2-4 over the last 7 years Julbo was kind enough to help me out with a new pair of Explorer 2.0s with the 0-4 lens as a replacement.

Upon opening the box at home it was hard to believe that the nearly see through lenses would transition dark enough to protect my eyes on a trip to the Cordillera Blanca Range. But I knew they would after everything I had read about em!

The shades performed flawlessly. It was awesome throwing them on during the early morning approach to protect from wind and snow. As dawn passed and transitioned to bright, high elevation sun exposure, the lenses transitioned as well and I didnt even have to think about it.

The breathability and coverage worked great for me. Having a pair of glasses you can throw on and wear the entire day without having to worry about changing lenses is so necessary in an already demanding environment. I've got a weird shaped head and I particularly made use of the adjustable/bendable stems above my ears.

To top it all off, the Explorer 2.0 has (unintentionally) stayed relevant in style, with an old school "bug eye" silhouette, that recently has made a booming comeback. If you're at all familiar with the term "gorp-core" or admire the old 90's early 20s silhouette these still hit the mark. Go get a pair!

    Crazy Versatile and Stupid Durable.

I bought the Explorer 2.0s back on June 18, 2021, in the 2-4 Polarized. I've worn them almost every day ever since on the job as a Professional pilot flying jets and during my adventures flyfishing, snow skiing, backpacking, and daily driving. As a person with light colored eyes, I've always been very photo-sensitive. In my job, I have to deal with light and UV rays at 45,000 feet and in mixed conditions near the ground. These glasses always help me perform at my best, and I know my eyes are protected from the harsh light at high altitude and on the slopes due to their UV protection and polarization. They are great!

My only feedback after wearing them more than 1,200 days is that the side protectors could use a retention system other than a plastic-on-plastic clip, as I've lost the side protectors many times. I've considered heating up a shortened needle and pushing it through the plastic clip to solve the problem. Super Glue and hot glue doeesn't solve the problem, ask me how I know? The lenses have got minor scratches, but most of that was self-induced over the hundreds of cleanings. The rubber has started to delaminate from the right ear piece but only in the last year.

Bottom line, I've recommended both the brand, these glasses, and my Julbo ski goggles to many friends and acquaintances over these years because they are such a great product. I recommended Julbo not because their quality is great, but because of how well you stand behind your product. I've…

    Great glasses with pristine protection

This is my second set of this model and liked then so much I bought this pair. Great for protecting the eyes from UV and well as wind. I’ve had my first pair for 3 years and traveled with them to Africa for Kilimanjaro and through Yosemite, the Amazon Jungle and all over and not a single scratch. Highly recommended.

Best Sports Prescription Sunglasses I have Owned.

I big game fish globally. Having the right prescription sunglasses when fishing is critical. My past prescription sunglasses have never been right. I ordered from Julbo, they stepped me through the customer prescription process, and got me my sunglasses in short order. I really love their product and their customer service. Their sunglasses were also more reasonable in price than major sunglasses providers, who seem not to do nearly as thorough a job in regard to prescription and fit.
